Description

In this article, we are going to introduce the art of masonry or sculpture. Sculpting is an art that involves making, cutting and carving stones to desired dimensions and making patterns on it. Stones are known as the primary material for sculpture because of their personality and high resistance. This art dates back to centuries before Christ and is considered as an ancient art.

What is sculpting or masonry?

Sculpting means bringing out a fine work of art from the heart of a rough and lifeless stone. This art, which is a very durable and resistant art, is made in different sizes and shapes. Masonry is considered one of the oldest arts in the world and Iran. Since various types of stones were among the first tools available to humans, this art has been formed and used for centuries. Sculptures are used to decorate the walls of mosques, building pillars, tombs, decorative panels and chess pieces, etc.

Introduction of sculpting tools and equipment

Today, modern and new tools and equipment are used to perform the art of masonry, precious decorative stones. Some of these tools are very useful that you need to know their names.

  • cutting machine
  • Diamond cutting machine
  • sanding machine
  • payment device
  • Milling machines
  • polishing machine
  • Diamond drill to create designs on stone
  • Protective equipment such as glasses and headphones

Characteristics of stone for sculpture

Stones are widely used in works and handicrafts due to their many characteristics and advantages. In Iran, there are various stones with different designs and sizes, each of which is used in a special place and for a special purpose, according to its shape and material. The characteristics of each stone are determined by its strength, color, transparency, streak, hardness and fracture. Due to their structure, stones are not dyeable and can only be dyed temporarily. This is also a very important point in the art of masonry.

How to make heavy objects in the art of masonry

To make stone objects, they first cut the stone to the approximate size of the product to be produced. After that, they draw the design of the desired object on the stone with an ax and then empty the inside of that part with coarse metal pens. After emptying, they polish it with smaller pens, and finally, they use a file or sandpaper to polish and smooth the outer surface.

Now there are few people who use the old way of stone carving. But today, devices similar to wood-cutting saws are used for sculpting operations. Masonry machines move with the help of a spring. The string of this device is located around a wooden axis that is attached to the stone with bitumen. This allows the craftsman to polish the outside of the stone by moving the reciprocating back and forth. This machine is used to make daisies without handles, vases, photo frames, desk and office services, fences, etc.

The art of masonry in the new era

Today, the cities of Qom and Mashhad are the two main centers of masonry. In these two cities, some people are engaged in different stages of stone extraction, stone cutting, stone carving and stone carving. Qom stonemasons use alabaster or white stone to produce their products. The stone products of Qom city, which are made with white stone, include candlesticks, vases, trays, bowls, lamp bases, panels, bedside lamps, statues, etc. in various sizes. Stone cutters in Mashhad use marble , refractory, black, yellow, red and white stones in making stoneware. The use of black stone in Mashhad is due to its cheapness and portability. Nearly 70% of stonemasons use black color.

Application of masonry art

Masonry is used in different sections and parts and various applications of this art can be had. Among these uses, we can mention the use in making construction stones , ring stones, making tombstones and stone containers.

ring stone

The art of turning minerals and precious stones into ring stones and finally turning them into ornaments is gem-cutting, which is in a way the same as stone-cutting. In addition to bringing a lot of profit, this art also attracts many enthusiasts due to its special charm. In other words, it can be said that stones are the soul of metal ornaments and give them life and appearance. Each precious stone has a name and special characteristics.

Tombstone

A grave stone carver also creates grave stone designs with his art of stone carving and gives it beauty and effect. Gravestone carvers use their art like others and are very creative and artistic. But unfortunately, in our society, they are not seen as artistic.

stone dishes

The information that archaeologists currently provide us indicates that the use of stone vessels and engraving on these vessels goes back to 2300 years BC. This art, like other arts, has its own principles. As you know, making stoneware, which is an art, requires a lot of experience and effort and needs interest. Today, stone vessels are also used as decorative and decorative vessels, which are very beautiful and special.

Researchers who have studied the history of jewelry making, have gone back to at least five thousand years BC. They have followed the footsteps of primitive jewelers to the early civilization of Egypt and Mesopotamia and have finally come to the conclusion that in the past, hanging jewels was a symbol to express power and a sign of importance and privilege of a certain class of people in that society. This symbolic role is sometimes connected with the use of jewelry in order to protect against diseases and with it, the growth of superstitious interests.
A number of treasures related to the civilization of 2500 years ago in Mesopotamia have been discovered, among which we can mention the discoveries of the royal tomb of the city of Ur. In this treasure, many precious items and lapis lazuli earrings were found, and even examples of the most primitive human activity of that time for goldsmithing can be examined.
Ancient Egyptians used precious stones to make heavy gem necklaces and crowns for use on helmets.
During the second and first millennium BC, the method of making jewelry in Europe and Western Asia indicated the emergence of the Iron and Bronze Age. In this period, brooches, brooches, bracelets and clothespins have simple geometric shapes with circular or circular reliefs. Iodine bush flower.
In the first millennium AD, jewelry making in Europe has generally been followed in the form of carving and molding and preparation of precious stones. While in other parts of the world, many decorative materials were used by artists.
Common jewelry in the Middle Ages consisted of bangles and signs that had religious uses. Most of these ornaments and signs were usually made of lead and carried images of saints or the shape of a temple. From the 11th century onwards, the city of Venice became the center of making decorative glass and fine jewelry.
The 17th century was the era of the evolution of glamorous jewelry and the transition to jewelry that matched the social conditions of that time. The 18th century in Europe is the era of the emergence of the craft of cutting beautiful jewelry, especially shining diamond jewelry, which continues to this day.
In the countries of Central Asia, jewelry making reflects many aspects of the material and spiritual life and lifestyle of the inhabitants of this region, as well as their religious, social, moral and artistic concepts.
Western jewelers were skilled in setting colored stones, such as turquoise and narsang, and used a variety of metalworking techniques, such as casting, embossing, brushwork, and tapestry.
At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, an immeasurable abundance of Alvan inlays, a great variety of shapes and also a kind of perfectionism appeared in Central Asian jewelry making.
The history of jewelry making in Iran,
archaeological evidences confirm the fact that the north and center of Iran were among the oldest centers of metalworking industries in the world. It is obvious that mankind could realize the usefulness of metal only in a land where metals and their minerals exist.

Metalworking and its related arts, as one of the main branches of artificial arts, from the earliest times to the contemporary era and the present,

valuable works such as Lorestan bronzes, Achaemenid jewelry and rhytons,

Sassanid fine gold and cement plates, irreplaceable metal works of the beginning of Islam. He has offered the unique Seljuk bronzes and lattice works and precious precious metals such as gilded and silvered and inlaid works of the Safavid era and finally impressive shrines to art lovers.
Metalworking includes many and diverse disciplines, and jewelry making is one of the most important of these disciplines. These artifacts include a wide range of products and jewelry that are made with different materials, such as wood, ivory, bone, horn, as well as colored glass, ceramic pieces, metals, precious and cheap colored stones, and placing colored pieces inside metals. is made These arts include two groups, original and valuable jewelry, such as gold and jewelry. Their main products include earrings, necklaces, bracelets, bangles, rings, etc.
In ancient Iran and in the times before the Medes and in the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC, in the archaeological excavations of Silk Hill, Marlik, Hasanluv... works were found that were beautiful and infinite, accurate and correct, and Been paid. These works are more than pottery and precious metals, especially gold and silver
The Achaemenid period was the flourishing period of Iran's metalworking, in the field of casting, hammering, mounting metal on other metal and also decorating metals with precious stones. In the mentioned period, many works of gold and silver were made, which shows the taste and mastery of metalsmiths in Andorra.
Exposed jewelry, related to the Achaemenid period, is beautiful and elegant, and in terms of goldsmithing, it is precise and perfect. In the Parthian period, interesting works in the form of earrings, bangles and necklaces were obtained, which are the graph of the advanced and developed art of that time.
The jewelry related to the Sasanian period, in which the art of jewelry was infinitely advanced, are other examples of the treasures of Iranian art, in the field of decorative items for self-decoration.
In the Islamic era, the art of goldsmithing and jewelry-making is associated with the art of gemmology, first natural lapis lazuli stones and gradually agate and shabq, and in recent times aquamarine, rubies, emeralds, diamonds and brilliants were used in decorating jewelry and in the present century and contemporary times, they are used Turquoise has also flourished as decorative gems.
In the Islamic era,
many of the methods for recycling and manufacturing gold continue in Iran, as in the past. Although, in addition to the traditional methods, new methods have been used; But still the same old methods are more common.

Silk is made up of natural protein fibers that mainly include fibroin. This protein is secreted by certain types of insect larvae to make cocoons. Although the secretions of these insects are also silk-like, most of the silk fabric in the world is obtained from the larvae of our own silkworms. This worm, which lives only on mulberry trees, is called Bombyx mori. To prepare silk fibers, they use the protective cocoon that this worm makes around itself. Bombyx Mori is really beautiful:

In certain lighting conditions, silk creates a brilliant light effect due to its triangular and prism-like structure. These prisms reflect the light at different angles, which creates a beautiful iridescent color of the silk. This is one of the reasons that made this fabric so luxurious and expensive.

History of silk fabric

Since the oldest sample of silk found dates back to 3630 BC, the origin of this fabric can be considered from the Neolithic era of China. Originally, humans made silk from wild insects, and it was not like today that they raised silkworms. These worms mostly lived in China, India and Europe in the wild, and for that reason they were very rare and could not fully meet the needs of textiles.

Silkworm breeding originates from China. One of the archeological evidences indicates that silk textiles existed in China in 6500 BC. Therefore, it can be said with confidence that the ancient Chinese must have used silk in 3600 BC.

Chinese legends attribute the art of making silk to Emperor Lizu; However, there are no strong historical records to show that the origin of this cloth was really from China. In ancient Chinese culture, only nobles wore silk; But with the development of Chinese civilization and their wealth, ordinary people also got access to this cloth.

Silk production in China led to the development of major pre-industrial trade routes. The Silk Road stretched from China to Western Europe, and Chinese merchants used this route to exchange silk for other goods in distant countries.

It took generations for the secrets of Nughandari (sericulture), which was the most valuable and protected knowledge among the Chinese aristocracy, to spread to other countries. Finally, in the first few centuries AD, the information of this industry about how to prepare refined silk reached the countries of Korea and India. India, Thailand and other Asian countries used to breed silkworms; But the Chinese method was considered a better method for this work.

Production of silk fabric in the West and Europe

Based on a series of limited historical records, there may have been silk production in the West in the distant past. Westerners have valued silk very much since Roman times, but the popularity of this rare fabric increased during the Middle Ages.

In the 11th century AD, silk production began throughout Europe. In the Middle Ages, many Italian city-states such as Lucca, Venice, and Florence relied heavily on silk production economically. After that, Noghan Dari gradually made its way to France and Spain.

In the 17th century, King James I introduced silk production to the New World, i.e. the post-medieval era, and the American states, including Connecticut and Massachusetts, quickly became the hub of silk production. World War II caused America to cut off its connection with Asian-made silks, and as a result, American companies used synthetic alternatives, including nylon, instead of silk.

The stages of silk production and making fabric from it

In general, the silk production process can be summarized in 6 stages:

first stage

The female silk moth lays about 300 to 500 eggs per month. Eggs turn into larvae and feed on mulberry leaves. Larvae molt 4 times during their development process.

second stage

The silkworm, which is not a worm as opposed to its name, but is actually a larva, when it climbs the branch, it pulls out some of the fibroin protein and makes a web to keep itself on the branch.

third level

The larva swings itself while excreting silk forming saliva. This silk is hardened and becomes a solid cocoon. Within 2 to 3 days, the larva wraps around itself a silk thread of approximately 1,600 meters.

The fourth stage

When silkworm farmers harvest the cocoons, they are exposed to high heat to prevent the worms from maturing. After that, in the degumming process, the cocoons are boiled for a short time to remove a small amount of sericin in the cocoons, which is a glue-like substance that the silkworm excretes to form the cocoons. At this stage, the poor larva dies.

The fifth stage

Workers gently brush the cocoons by hand or with an automatic machine until the end of the string is exposed. Then they open it. Silkworms make a cocoon from a long string of fibers. Therefore, each fully opened cocoon is a strand of silk:

Then the string is wound on the spool. As the silk thread is wound on the spool, it is automatically joined to another thread to form a continuous thread. The remaining sericin in the strand helps the strands stick together. Then this long string is spun and attached to a roller to make it more uniform. At this stage, the thread is ready for making fabric.

The sixth stage

Finally, using the satin weave method, silk threads are turned into fabric.

Side processes in the preparation of silk fabric

In order for the silk fabric to have the characteristics desired by the manufacturer, certain processes must be performed on it. For example, before weaving the yarn into fabric, most manufacturers first dye, bleach, or maybe toughen it with various materials to achieve the specific properties they expect from it.

What are the uses of silk fabric?

Silk can be used in thousands of ways. However, to make the matter easier, the applications of this fabric can be divided into two consumer and industrial categories:

Silk for consumer applications

The most common use of silk is the production of clothing such as scarves, shirts, blouses and dresses . Silk has been prized for its exceptional softness and durability for thousands of years, and to this day, consumers prefer real silk over synthetic alternatives. Because of its lightness and softness, silk is one of the best fabrics for women's underwear, men's underwear, pillowcases, pajamas, curtains or wall hangings. Another one of the most common uses of silk is in the preparation of sports clothing. For this purpose, silk is combined with cotton to obtain a fabric with high strength and stain resistance.

Silk for industrial applications

Although synthetic alternatives to silk are more common for industrial applications, many manufacturers, including parachute manufacturers and manufacturers of medical goods, especially surgical sutures, still use silk for these products. The thinness of silk fibers and its antibacterial properties have made this material ideal for medical applications.

Which country is the largest supplier of silk in the world?

According to the World Atlas report, China ranks first as the largest producer of silk in the world. With the production of nearly 150,000 tons of silk per year, which is 78% of the world's total silk, this country is far from its biggest competitor, India, which produces about 35,000 tons of silk per year.

The third place is reserved for Uzbekistan, followed by Thailand in the fourth place. China is not only the largest producer of silk textiles, it also has the largest silk market in the world. The United States and the European Union are the largest consumers of silk produced in India and China.

The price of silk fabric

Silk fabric is very expensive and it makes sense; Because it is very difficult to produce, breeding of worms is time-consuming and expensive, and to all this you have to add the cost of transportation and transfer of silk from the origin to the final consumer.

Know the types of silk and types of silk fabric

The raw material of silk itself has different types and silk fabric is prepared with different textures; Therefore, we also have a variety of silk fabrics. In the following, we introduce both of them in two sections:

types of silk; From mulberry cream to Mediterranean oysters

Although the silk obtained from the silkworm of the white mulberry tree is the most widely used type of silk and the fabric made from it is the most common, we have several other types of silk fabric, which we have listed below:

mulberry silk; The most common silk in the world

Mulberry silk is the simplest and cheapest type of silk. Almost all silk fabrics in the world are made from mulberry silk. This silk is obtained from the silkworm that feeds on the white mulberry tree and we all know it.

Eri Silk; peace silk

This silk is called peace silk; The reason is that there is no need to kill silkworms to prepare it. Eri silkworm lives on castor trees, and for this reason, this silk is sometimes known as castor silk. The fabric from which it is made is very heavy and more durable than mulberry silk. It can almost be said that today they do not prepare it anywhere in the world.

Tasar silk; From silkworm native to India

After Mulberry, Tasar silk is the most common type of raw silk. This silk is obtained wildly from Indian silkworms. Since it is naturally copper in color, it is very difficult to dye it. Japan is also the habitat of Tasar silkworm; But the silk of their worms is green. This silk is mostly used in furniture making.

spider silk; Silk produced by spiders

This silk is obtained from a kind of spider and has great elasticity. Since spiders cannot be cultivated like worms, the silk produced from them is very expensive and therefore not widely used in the textile industry. Most manufacturers of bulletproof vests, microscopes, telescopes and some other industrial products may use this silk.

Moga silk; Specific to the people of Assam in India

Moga silk is produced only in the Indian state of Assam. Moga silkworm is semi-domesticated. Moga silk is not well known in other parts of the world, but the inhabitants of Assam have been producing Moga silk clothes for the nobility of this region for generations.

sea silk; Silk produced from oysters

They are a special species of oysters native to the Mediterranean Sea, which produce silk-like fibers in a very small amount. The inhabitants of Taranto, Italy, cultivate these oysters, and because of this, the city produces a very small amount of sea silk, which makes the fabric produced from it rare. It is also called shell silk.

Kwan Silk; Silk to strengthen other silk fibers

A type of silkworm called Pacypasa atus, native to certain regions of Greece, Turkey and Italy, produces coan silk. This silkworm feeds on pine, cypress and oak trees. In ancient Rome, this silk had many uses; But today its production is limited and it is mainly used to strengthen other types of silk fibers.

types of silk fabric; From satin to crepe

There are different types of silk fabrics according to the source of silk (worms or other insects) and the fabric weaving method, which are:

charming Fabric similar to satin

This silk fabric is made with satin texture, and for this reason, it is usually confused with satin. One side is glossy and the other is matte. In general, it is more shiny than satin and is used in making scarves, shirts and underwear.

chiffon; Light and flexible

Silk chiffon is made from twisted silk fibers. It's light and slightly stretchy, has a rough surface and is great for bulking and layering clothes. It is mostly used for making wedding dresses and gowns, but it is also suitable for scarves and shirts.

silk crepe; Has a rough appearance

People of many countries of the world are famous for their textile industry and attractive designs. If you pay more attention to the designs of handwoven textiles, you will notice that in all of them traces of the culture and customs of the people of that country can be seen, and they often have an indication of the nature and geographical location of the people. Fortunately, with the progress of societies and technology, handicrafts and beautiful designs and colors of textiles have not disappeared and can still be enjoyed. For example, such unique designs are used in Japanese kimonos or Scottish men's skirts. The designs and patterns that the artists create on the fabrics with full elegance are a beautiful expression of art and culture. There are patterns on clothes in many countries and many examples of them can be seen in our dear Iran.

iran handicrafts

1-Clock printing

Batik print is a symbol of clothes and fabrics of Indonesian people. This design is inserted on the clothes in both hand-woven and printed form and changes the face of the fabrics. In calabash printing, they use wax and dyeing operations to transfer the design on the fabric. You should know that there is kalachai printing in other countries such as Iran, but it was originally in Indonesia in a traditional way and the people of this country brought their ancient culture and traditions to the cloth, that's why kalachai printing was included in UNESCO's world list as a cultural symbol in 2009. Indonesia was registered.

2- Glass embroidery

The art of glass embroidery (Shisheh) or (Shisha) makes the cloth very colorful and lovely, but the point that distinguishes it from other counterparts is the use of mirrors among embroidery. Small pieces of mirror can be easily seen next to the patterns of the fabric and double its beauty. The history of this type of embroidery goes back to the 7th century AD. It is believed that the name of this art is derived from the Persian word glass, but nowadays glass embroidery is very popular in India and it is also seen in some other Asian countries such as China and Afghanistan. It is interesting to know that glass embroidered fabrics are not only used in clothing, but they are also used in home decoration, and they are also used in curtains, table cloths, wall hangings, etc.

3- Cuban plans

Cuban fabrics have special and attractive designs. The people of this land sew clothes from their traditional fabrics that they can use in their important ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, etc. In authentic Cuban fabrics, natural colors were used to design, which gives a special effect to the fabric. Cuban men and women still use skirts with original designs and patterns for their special ceremonies.

One of the most popular Cuban handicrafts is called raffia, which is made from the palm of the same name. Cuban artists decorate these handwovens unevenly and using various geometric shapes. Raffia can be a good souvenir from Cuba

4-Tartan

Tartan is also known as Scottish twisted fabric. Tartans are fabrics with very simple patterns and consist of horizontal and circular patterns. One of the reasons why tartans still have many fans is the age of this type of design and fabric. The history of tartans goes back to the Middle Ages and is very important to the Scots. It is not bad to know that many fabrics have been discovered in Austria or other European countries that are similar to tartan designs. It is said that the tribes that lived in Scotland in the past used tartan. Now the tartans in which red, blue, white and green colors are

used are more known.

5-African motifs

African motifs, which are also known as Ankara, is another handicraft that has been included in this list. To prepare these beautiful motifs, they were inspired by Indonesian designs and an attempt was made to use wax and wax to make African designs more attractive, but this work cost a lot and was not welcomed. If you can find fabrics that are traditionally designed, you should be able to smell the waxy color on the hem. Since 1960, the textile industry has been popular in Africa, especially West Africa, and is easily available. However, authentic African fabrics are still considered a luxury item for the people of this land.

6-Mexican embroidery

Mexican embroideries are very unique and special and bring different cultures with them. Floral and various animal elements are heavily used in Mexican designs, but fabrics with floral designs are more popular for clothing. With one look at the embroidered fabrics in the Mexican style, you will realize that the artists of this land have created the designs very carefully and beautified the fabrics with patience and using different colors.

7- Japanese Yuzen silk

Many traditional Japanese clothes are made of Yūzen silk. Yuzin dates back to the Edo period (17th to 19th centuries AD). Yuzens are delicately designed silks that are amazing and eye-catching. Kimonos that are made of this type and decorated with Yuzen are very popular and Japanese women use such clothes in special events, for example, black kimonos are for married women. These clothes are mostly designed with patterns of birds and plants, although classic designs can also be seen in the fabrics.

8- Needle

Suzani is known as needlework in Iran. This art is popular in Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. In this art, cotton and silk fabrics are beautified with patterns such as flowers, birds, fruits, sun, etc. Needlepoint artists use vivid colors such as yellow, red, blue, green, and orange in their designs, which double the charm of the designs. If you look closely at the embroidered fabrics in different Asian countries, they have small differences with each other, but they are generally similar.

9- Marash embroidery

Marash embroideries are also among the most attractive fabric designs in the world. This type of embroidery is unique to Armenia and has many fans among women and especially young girls. Girls enjoy wearing dresses that have traditional fabrics, and peasant and village women strive to create the most beautiful designs for their customers. The artists who embroider in Marashi style use pearls, stones or small ornaments to make their work more beautiful, which doubles the charm of the fabrics. The designs of this embroidery style include birds, plants and religious symbols.
